Students with different levels of experience and technical skills work together. The focus is on drawing and painting. Basic understanding of colour and painting techniques is a pre-requisite for this group. Directed activities are aimed at extension of these concepts. A “Studio” option is always available for advanced students. Many Advanced (or Studio Level) students undertake the Studio option regardless of the directed activity scheduled. Ongoing students may decide to keep working on a previous project and be mentored. Ocassionally a second assistant tutor may be brought in to streamline this process.
“Studio” refers to a mentoring approach. It does not mean that the tutor will conduct individual classes for “Studio” students. On days programmed as “Studio”, tutors will prioritise mentoring of individual activities. On other days, tutors will endeavour to assist as much as possible, but tutored activities will take priority.
This class runs concurrently with the Beginners Short Courses. An advantage of this format is that some students who have missed out on some areas of basics can choose to join the Beginners Group for a term, or for a particular activity. Some students who are not beginners but who have been away from art for a while may choose to join the Building Basics group for a term or more to build up confidence and/or a refresher.
2019 Term Themes
The following topics are starting points for directed painting and drawing studies.
Term 1: The Portrait
What is a portrait? What constitutes a good portrait? As well as the above questions, we'll explore structure and form through colour and form, using both drawing and painting.
Term 2: Wrapped form/ drapery-clothing.
Exploring the effect of the form beneath the outer layers be it a bag, a table or a human form.
Term 3: Exploring landscape.
To be discussed. Tracey Marning-Studen and Jennifer Andrews will co-tutor this class.
Term 4: Extension
This term is a time to extend and develop. Some student might opt to work in "studio" mode. The concept of developing a theme will be discussed. Other directed activities will touch on concepts already covered throughout the year and might include: Seated figure study, Alle prima studies of landscape, still lifes will be set up on other days.
All students must provide their own materials, drawing boards and easels. A list of materials is provided each term and will build on the original starter kit.
